OHHH. I gotcha now. I thought you were saying it was in my XML file...
in fact the newline was coming from the PHP code, where I extract the
correct line from the XML file (which, of course, came with the line's
terminating newline.) I just took it out with trim() but sadly the map
still doesn't work. I'm back to looking at the statements that extract
the info from the XML... The closer it seems to being functional the
harder it is to just give up.
