That may be a clue about other HTML or CSS that needs fixing properly.
If you avoid using the doctype recommended for use with maps API, it
may be difficult to get the map working properly.

Yes you can, but you'd need to use body 'onload' or window.onload
events to ensure map building happens after the page is complete.
