I'm a volunteer helping out at Aravind Eye Hospital in India. The
hospital would like to display various data about the hospitals
(location, facilities, etc.) using Google Maps or Google Earth, but
have the data come from an SQL database. Actually, they want a lot
more than that, but this is a starting point.

For example, perhaps someone might want to view all the Aravind
hospitals in South India that have a "retina clinic". Presumably this
person could go to an Aravind web page, select the appropriate
criteria, and the server could then display a map of South India with
the names and locations for the eye care facilities that provide
"retina" service.

I've been reading and trying out the examples at http://econym.org.uk/gmap/.
I've been learning quite a bit, but it's slow going. However, I'm no
longer even sure I'm going in the right direction. I've got some very
basic questions to ask first, and I'm not sure even which one of them
to use.

>From information I've already received, it's probably better to use
Google Maps, rather than Google Earth? I am trying to find good
documentation about how to match either of these to an SQL server, so
a user on the web page can make a "query" and get the appropriate map
image displayed? I've been searching the 'net, and while I find lots
of lost people with similar questions, I don't find too many answers.

Aravind (www.aravind.org) has a set of maps of all of South India. I
haven't seen them yet, but the people here open them with a program
called Arcview. One of my next questions (once I get to see the maps
and find out what format they are in) will be whether I can use that
map data with Google Maps (or Google Earth), but for now let me stick
to the very basic question, so at least I can identify which Google
product would integrate with the sql database.

By the way, I won't be the person actually doing this work. What I
need to do, is figure out how it can be done, then document it, so
someone working here at the hospital can put in all the appropriate
queries that the hospital might find helpful to share with people.
