I prototyped a Tiled TIFF (tissue slide) viewer based on Google Maps. Here is a thumbnail page. http://www.ariasystemsconsulting.com/maps/all2.html. Clicking on the thumbnail will give you a full sized viewer for the slide.
After I wrote the viewer, I found that there was another Virtual Slide Viewer using Google Maps (http://informatics.med.nyu.edu/ virtualmicroscope/). However, my viewer is noticeably faster, probably due to my very efficient Tiled TIFF server. I'm in the process of adding on other features such as annotations and side by side view.
