I've been having this problem as well using Firefox 3.0.11 and Firebug. Clearing the browser cache often helps speed things up. I think it happens when doing development on a site and loading it numerous times and probably clogging up Firefox with memory leaks somewhere. If I load the same site in Safari it works fine, so I think it is related to Firefox and multiple reloads of the same site.
