That's probably too much work for just a demo.
First you download the files and save them to a database. Then you
build custom tiles out of them or out of the database, and finally you
put together an application that displays the tiles and queries the
database, via an AJAX call, when the map is clicked.

That's population density per county, with data obtained from the US
Census Bureau. The data came as shapefiles.
