After further investigation, it looks like I'm now sending sprite.png from the server every time I render the icon (even though I declared a dummy image for the sprite in the top of my <head>.
This only happens in FF3.5. Safari 5, IE6/7/8, and FireFox 3 all just get the sprite image once.
