> So how about storing coordinates?

How about it? Whether something is Google's content or not, depends
on if it came from Google or not.
I'm not a lawyer blah, but I wouldn't expect storing the coordinates
of a user's click on a screen to cause a problem.

In the UK, we have a quasi-commercial national mapping agency which
DOES claim ownership of any position readings taken off their maps!

I can't see anything to suggest that those trails were ever based on
directions supplied by Google, they're probably based on GPS tracks.
Note that they don't all 'follow streets' which is in your orginal
spec... but perhaps you don't mean automatically?

If you wanted only a few routes to store and you know what they are,
you might effectively trace them off a map and do what you like with
them. If you want automatic routing, you're stuck with the terms of
whichever directions service you choose.

It's your project and you must decide if it meets the terms of any
services you employ.
