Ach! Too right -- I'd forgotten that.  The link provided the answer:
It shouldn't be part of the map code but instead, a floating element
positioned relative to the the element *containing* the map.  I'll
have to try that and see what happens when the map is panned or
scrolled underneath it.  Thanks!
