As a matter of curiousity, which marker manager are you using?

This example from the open source marker manager seems to support what
you are trying to do:
http://gmaps-utility-library.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/markermanager/1.1/examples/google_northamerica_offices.html

click "hide all markers"
