GMail is probably off-topic for this group as there is a Mail Help Group, but spam detection is intriguing: it relies on the number of GMail users who report mail as spam. The "Spam" folder of the entire GMail community is used to identify what is spam. That's why you should never clear it yourself, and check it regularly to make sure that what is not spam is moved to your Inbox. You can get round over-enthusiastic marking by setting up a filter to ensure that mail sent from whichever address it is never gets sent to Spam.
