Read the thread Rossko linked to. For GDirections... - if you are specifying walking directions, you must use the text panel (and can specify a map if desired) because it won't work without it; - for driving directions, you must specify either a map or a text div. That's something I misunderstood in the past. GDirections will work without either, but the Terms do say you need at least one of map or text div. So no, you're not right. And if you use GClientGeocoder, you must use a map.
