Thanks for your help :) Your 'is it in the UK' made me think about my map.setCenter co- ordinates and indeed they were transposed and in completely the wrong place!
I now see my map but instead of going from John o'Groats to Land's End it goes to Brest in northern France! It's also quite slow to load the polyline so perhaps encoding isn't the solution?
