Well, I kept working on that page and tried different things, you must
have been on it when I was busy.
After investigation, I found a solution (as shown on
http://keystonewebsites.com/articles/adsense.php).
It seems the problem causing all this trouble is that Google still
uses 'document.write' (although it could be done by different easily)
- which doesn't work when serving the page in XHTML mode.
I got around this by following the suggestion on the referenced page
and pull in the Google code via an external HTML file (which is served
with "text/html" content type).
