Yep - it is horrible.  The tiles have not been updated since the mid
nineties.  A lot of tiles in Northern Michigan are simply missing.
Unless you are willing to implement a custom UTM projection, you have
to run everything through a separate USGS server.  It adds its logo to
every tile sized image it returns.

With elevation information (SRTM or NED), you could draw polys.
