Ok - I think I've answered some of this after stumbling across this demo:

http://gmaps-samples.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/googlebar/googlebaroptions.html

This shows various googleBarOptions() being used, and clearly they are using
custom markers *and* the inline search results.

I'll look at the code and post back...
