Thank you Pierre you for this information. I have adapted your code from the sample map to my maps and got things working. The quality of the output is excellent.
A couple of things: 1) It seems to work up to zoom = 18 which is important for my maps. The contours are a little zig-zaggy but not too bad. USGS topos only work to zoom = 17. 2) the interface was sufficiently different, particularly with the function WMSGetTileUrl(tile,zoom) so that I had to make a special case in the function WMSCreateMap(...) for this one map type, otherwise the rest of my maps would fail. With that, all my map types now work. 3) The order of the parameters for the function WMSCreateMap(...) is different from what I was using, which also came from Jef Poskanzer. I may have gotten an earlier version. It was no trouble to rearrange them appropriately. I have a working version in test. In a day or two I'll post a link after I test it a bit more.
