Okeydoke, I think the problem really lies here -

The maps API attracts novice javascript programmers because it does
things they want !  But the downside is that it isn't at all easy for
novice programmers to get to grips with.   The reference doc is
constructed to a standard which does make sense to OOP programmers.  I
suspect Google will not want to turn the maps API docs into a OOP
tutorial, but that's their decision.
