DW places it there because of the way the template has been set up,
not because of anything inherent in DW. Lots of people do use DW but I
don't suppose many will be async loading in this fashion, anyone who
did want to async load would generally use the AJAX common loader.  Or
they might even address the required element by name instead of hoping
it's the first one.
Anyways, you could look at the template, if you have access.  Exclude
the <head> from the locking perhaps, I don't know how it works.
