Yes. You can even pass parameters (arguments) that way. Just take any
event name out of hat and transmit the event:
Gevent.trigger(theOverlay, "overlayselected", a, b, c);
You can receive the event and its optional parameters elsewhere in the
code:
GEvent.addListener(theOverlay, "overlayselected", function(a,b,c)
{ doSomething });
