Sounds like the behavior of GGeoXml may have changed.  I know it uses
some rudimentary marker manager (for large numbers of markers, not all
will be displayed), maybe the custom icon behavior has now changed as
well.

It might be worth looking into the third party parsers (EGeoXml and
GeoXml) although they may be too slow for the number of points you are
displaying.
