Fair enough.  Here's a version that modifies the Google homepage.  In
IE7 with Trixie (the platform I'm focused on for now) it adds the
link, which creates a popup window and spits out 2 alerts.  Then, the
browser freezes.  I changed the second alert box to display
GBrowserIsCompatible(), since that still confirms that the API files
have been loaded and it's more obvious what the correct output should
be.

Strangely, I tested the same script in Firefox/Greasemonkey and the
link is added, but it won't create the popup.  I'm not sure why this
is the case-- but it doesn't affect me directly.  I just hope it
doesn't hinder you all from giving me a little advice.
