Another way of looking at v2 vs. v3 is to consider the heritage of the versions.
v2 is derived directly from the maps.google.com site, which has a lot of baggage that can't be left behind. v3 is a "clean sheet" system that takes advantage of the best of JavaScript, HTML5 concepts and modular loading.
