That it works or doesn't depending on the alert doesn't make sense, because you're using the callback function correctly, and I have just seen the map load perfectly, without the alert, though this was only one among many attempts to load the page. What seems to happen is that your server is erratic, and sometimes it just takes a huge amount of time to respond.
