I suggest looking at encoded polylines, which will do this for you.
But don't use Google's documentation, it doesn't explain how they work
and actually provides sub-standard examples.

Search the group for a link to Prof Mark McClure's pages, which are
authoritative. Even if you choose not to encode your lines, he
explains DP well.
