Google Earth has a "terrain" option. It's at the bottom of "Layers". 
When switched on, when you select an oblique view, rather than looking 
straight down, you get a 3d effect.

Google Maps always looks straight down. The only way to recognise 
steepness is to activate the G_PHYSICAL_MAP map type and look at the 
contours.
