a. Now that I have read 
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/#API_Updates
, I see that I should not specify an exact version (like 2.84) but
instead just say v=2 or v=2.s. So, I changed mine to v=2.s.  (Is that
what you'd recommend?)

b. Aha... Is the versioning scheme such that "140" is greater than
"84" (when viewed as if whole numbers)?  I found "2.158" in the docs
as the version that introduced getMaxZoomAtLatLng.  I have not been
able to find where the "latest av avilable version" is noted or when
"2.158" will become available.   (And if it is not yet available/
functional, why would there be a few sites that show the example that
is supposed to illustrate it.)
