I found a post from 2008 that tells how to determine what version was actually used when I set v to 2.x or 2.s. It involves traversing the DOM to find the line with "mapfiles" and then parsing to obtain version number (it dates itself: it only grabs two digits, and we're now at three digits).
Before I go ahead an implement that solution... is there a simpler way, such as calling some new Google Maps function?
