I am working on a map that will display the OHV (4x4, ATV, and dirt bike) areas and trails in the state of Washington.
My current map, in the very early stages of development, is located here: http://www.xmxpro.com/Catalog-map/catalog-map.htm Before going too far, I want to get input on which type of data file to use: XML, KML, or text file. I have looked at several of Mike's excellent tutorials and gotten some ideas, but wanted information as to the best way to set up the data file for the end result I'm looking for. The first map a user would see would be a map of the entire state of Washington with markers indicating each National Forest or other area that allows OHVs. As a user zooms in on an area, the single marker would be replaced by a additional markers (regional markers for several of the National Forests). As the user continued to zoom in, these markers would be replaced by individual area/trail markers. I believe I could accomplish this by using clustered markers. I also want the map user to be able to select whether they are looking for 4x4, ATV, dirt bike, or a combination of any of the three types of area/trails - the same as Mike's marker categories tutorial. At the same time, due to the closeness of some of the trails, I'd like the map to display only those markers that are currently in the displayed map area (not sure if there's a tutorial to cover this). I would like to use a KML data file so I could have a little more description in the side-bar - similar to the current Google Maps, but understand that is not possible due to wanting to use the hidden and show feature while using marker categories. Would also like the side-bar item to be highlighted when a marker on the map is clicked on.
