If it wasn't for MSIE it would be easy: If you omit the size information, then in browsers except MSIE the image is displayed at its natural size. In MSIE, if you omit the size information, then the image is displayed at zero size and you can't see it.
(I've not tried that with .gif icons. It's possible that the zero sizing is an artefact of AlphaImageLoader. Why not do some experiments with that and let us know if it works.) Other than that, perhaps it's possible to preload the images and read their sizes.
