I'm trying to hunt down sources of GIS data for a web app I'm developing. It looks like a lot of the data I'm looking for might be hard to compile.
In the city where I live, which is essentially my case study at the moment - Edmonton, Alberta - it looks like a lot of the data I might want is available via the city website itself @ http://www.edmonton.ca/business/business_services/geoedmonton.aspx My only issue is that, I want data like this for all cities in North America and going through metro centers one by one, writing importers for their multitude of goofy formats, isn't particularly appealing. I've tried to find this information on Google and my initial results is that it's not *really* available. You can feed the system a query like "Edmonton Schools" but the results are more of a coincidence (you'll get karate schools, truck driving schools) rather than explicit results like public, catholic, private k12 schools. Have I simply not dug deep enough and found that yes, in fact, this data is available without having to use 3rd party data sources? Things like schools and hospitals seem like they would definitely be within the purview of Google maps. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Google Maps API" group.
