Two-letter properties are internal to the API, and are likely to change at each release. To use such an undocumented property you need to lock into a particular version. The changelog http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/wiki/JavascriptMapsAPIChangelog indicates that v2.184 was current on 4 December; if you're testing with v2 today it's v2.193.
