A single level animated zoom works because the API already has the tiles for the current level and can scale them up or down by a factor of up to two before loading the new tiles.
For multi-level animated zooms, the tiles for the intermediate zoom levels don't load fast enough for the effect to look pretty. If you want pretty animated zooms, use the Google Earth API.
