Someone reported a discrepancy with a location on my site at http://www.levinecentral.com/ham/grid_square.php that I started to investigate. The specific address lookup is UK post code SK7 3HZ. As you can see below, 3 different requests of the lat/lon from google providing the same UK post code produces 3 different answers. Anyone have an idea why the request to Google for mapping the same address results in 3 different answers? BTW, from what the person in the UK tells me, the Google Map look-up (#2 below) is the most accurate.
1) Calling API web service for UK post code SK7 3HZ with URL http://maps.google.com/maps/geo?q=SK7%203HZ&output=csv&sensor=false&key=my_map_key shows a lat/lon result of 53.3630073,-2.1602024 . This is also where I show the point mapped within my web site at http://www.levinecentral.com/ham/grid_square.php?Address=SK7%203HZ since it essentially calls that same URL. 2) Using Google Maps with that same UK post code with a URL of http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=SK7+3HZ&sll=53.382586,-2.16521&sspn=0.069523,0.124111&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Stockport,+Cheshire+SK7+3HZ,+United+Kingdom&z=16 seems to indicate the center map point at 53.382586, -2.16521 and you can visually see the difference between #1 and #2 when comparing the maps and plotted point as well. 3) And I get an even different result if I do the API web service lookup using a UK domain name: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/geo?q=SK7%203HZ&output=csv&sensor=false&key=my_map_key shows a lat/lon result of 53.3813773, -2.1142758 3 lookups to Google using the same post code and 3 different results. Any insight into why? I'd really like #1 to provide the proper answer as it's obviously the way you'd access the information from within a web application. Thanks for any guidance you can provide!
