There's two "obvious" things that could be going wrong. Can't tell which (or if it's something that's not obvious) without a link to a page that exhibits the problem.

1. Not all PNG files are the same. Browsers other than MSIE can handle all the weird options that rarely get used, like palletisation and two-colour PNGs. MSIE with AlphaImageLoader can't handle all the variations.

2. If you fail to specify the .iconSize of the GIcon, then MSIE ends up having to tell AlphaImageLoader that the size is zero, and what gets rendered on the screen is your image but scaled to a size of (0,0), which is hard to see. Other browsers use the original size of the image.
