I used the first section of http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html to do something similar. Mine is server-side, so no code example, I'm afraid, but it works. It produces a bearing which you can then test to convert -- between 337.5 and 22.5 is North, 22.5 to 67.5 is North- east, and so on -- and a distance.
