Even if it is not strictly google maps api, I believe this can be
interesting if you need to develop webmaps with real gis
functionalities behind.
It is important to "lock" the map while the gis-server is working and
"unlock" it when the server processing results are returned... ;-)

I solved with this jquery plugin:
