What, about your theory?  Yes, that's right. It crops up several times
a week here.   If the map is hidden when you build it, the API asks
the browser "what size is my div" and the browser replies
"zero" (being hidden).  A map is built with the centre at the "zero"
positon at top left.  You get to see some tiles because they are
always 256px even for a zero size map.
