The general guideline is:

Post a link to your map so we can tell what is wrong for ourselves (it
doesn't to tell what you think is wrong and how to reproduce the
problem if it isn't obvious).

Sounds like you have some css that is being inherited by the map that
isn't what you want.

This, from Mike Williams' tutorial, may help (although it is talking
about infowindows, the concepts should apply):
