Thanks for the input! I do plan to use the GGeoXml object for the smaller KML files that I have and it seems to work well! It's just that this particular data set, as a KML file, is 16MB, so I think tiles would work better.
Here's a question for everyone -- are there any good examples that show me how I can just use tiles that were created from the WMS and cut the WMS requests out of the picture alltogether? This particular data set is only updated twice/year, and I used GeoWebCache to generate tiles in the Google Maps tiling scheme, so even if there's an example of how to make sure the right tiles are chosen for the right locations at each zoom level would greatly help.
