ok, here's a temp link: http://cobs.pol.ac.uk/mapViewer/index.php
best examples of what i mean is when you check the ferry option and hf radar, compare these in IE and Firefox. I'm not sure how where i'd place setTimeout? i'm under assumption that you load all the data for your markers at the start, this one loads it as and when its clicked first time only. I did it differently so we avoid loading time at the start like the original: http://cobs.pol.ac.uk/gmapper/ My main aim is to have a div tag that states its loading while it fetches the data, the 3/4 second wait isn't an issue with this tag displaying its loading, only when its not that it becomes a problem. As you will see that IE, Chrome and Safari like to finish all the processing before they display anything new which gives rise to the loading div problem.
