looking at thickbox.js, I found this complicated line in function
tb_remove()
>>> $("#TB_window").fadeOut("fast",function(){$('#TB_window,#TB_overlay,#TB_HideSelect').trigger("unload").unbind().remove();});
replacing it with something simpler seems to fix the problem:
$("#TB_load,#TB_window,#TB_overlay,#TB_HideSelect").remove();
