Yes, I realise that, but was hoping to avoid the need.  I do have
something in place that seems to work in practice, but I'm wondering
whether all the resources used are actually being released for re-use.

Some Google components, perhaps all, seem to have an undocumented
clear() function, which may be relevant.

No.  If a user pushes 'n' pulls or zooms in and out of a Google map
too often without giving the map time to respond, eventually it sulks
and stops working.  The symptom is that although all the usual status
bar messages occur, the map itself remains blank.  It's not usually a
problem, because the user is not usually that manic.  However, on my
two most popular pages, there is both a Google and an Open Layers UK
Ordnance Survey map, and the latter is very greedy of bandwidth, so
this problem is much more likely to occur.

Hence I need to know if there's an 'official' way to clean up and
relaunch the map.
