regarding the additional text above the video, it's a lot easier to
add attributes to the XML file than elements. Generally attributes
are used for mandatory data, and elements for optional data, or data
that has inherent structure.
Since all videos need a title then this can be an attribute. We began
with a data model about videos, but now it's really a model about
locations, with only a single attribute related to videos, something
like:
<campus>
<location
title="UCL: Front Quad"
menu="Front Quad"
category="UCL CAMPUS"
video="FrontQuad_out.swf"
lat="51.52453218968203"
lng="-0.13402462005615234"/>
<location
title="UCL: Bloomsbury Theatre"
menu="Bloomsbury Theatre"
category="UCL CAMPUS"
video="BloomsburyTheatre_out.swf"
lat="51.52497275482765"
lng=" -0.1328444480895996"/>
</campus>
I found a JQuery Accordian menu at the top universities site, and this
can be useful when you have a very long sidebar which can be broken
down into categories.

Also it's good to use an icon for a video, rather than the standard
google marker:

When designing the sidebar menu, you'll need to include the header
from the main site to get an idea of how it might look, so here's an
example with all the things we've discussed:
