Thank you for your response. The order in which I've loaded the scripts is the same in both cases, which makes me think that's not the problem.
What I had NOT done was to load the Google Maps key. I would have expected that to have produced a very different error message (and no map), so I'm puzzled that I got a map at all. I have loaded the key, and sorted out the directory levels of my markers, and all seems to be working as expected now.
