It is certainly the most efficient thing to do in terms of your development
time.  It should take you only a few hours to write up some code and see if
it meets your needs.

The most efficent thing to do in terms of download time and total code size
in the browser is to write a Java class that manipulates the Maps JS API in
just the way you want.  Assuming you will be using a subset of the
funcitonality of the full gmaps-api-utilities script you want, the GWT
version will obfuscase and do dead code elimination.  If you want the
absolutely fastest load time, write a native app for the platform.
