is there a best practices for calculating the bounds and center of a
map?

I have an app in rails using geokit where you can enter addresses,
which get their lat, long calculated by geocoding, and then a new
GMarker gets put on a map which displays. My trouble is, I find my
map doesn't show all the markers. For example, if you add an address
in Seattle, Washington and another address in Miami, Florida, then the
map shows only the Seattle marker (and a map showing western
Washington). If you scroll south-eastward, you'll eventually see the
marker in Florida for the second address.

How do you calculate where the center of the map ought to be, and how
much zoom to use on the map?

I know I'm missing something simple.
