Look at creating a custom tile layer.

Creating tiles on the server means you'd be dealing with pixel and not
geographical coordinates.
You could create whatever pattern of markers on each tile that you
want separated by however many pixels you want.

Just a little javascript and some PHP.

Faster and more efficient than a map full of overlays :-)
