Usually a file that works on maps.google.com by pasting the url will
work ok in the maps API

http://gis1.design.iastate.edu/esriServerTesting/lidar.kmz

This kml url displays in maps.google.com but not in the API

However I found that having an absolute url in the kmz to the raster
works ok, but having the raster locally zipped inside the kmz doesn't
seem to work:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<kml xmlns="http://www.opengis.net/kml/2.2";>
<Document id="Layers">
  <name>Layers</name>
  <Snippet></Snippet>
  <GroundOverlay>
    <name>Layers: Composite</name>
    <Icon>
      <href>http://www.william-map.com/20100728/1/Composite.png</href>
      <viewBoundScale>1.0</viewBoundScale>
    </Icon>
    <LatLonBox>
      <north>43.879443</north>
      <south>40.010351</south>
      <east>-89.407885</east>
      <west>-97.346448</west>
      <rotation>0</rotation>
    </LatLonBox>
  </GroundOverlay>
</Document>
</kml>
