"I'm having the exact same issue! Since most of my maps are for sailors they go 
round the world and hence look horrible with large black sections." 

So, if others are finding this same issue, then please "star" it, hopefully it 
will get some attention.  Whatever changed in the API very problematic for us 
in an application we were planning to deploy.
